Educator's Corner

Fluency

When working on reading fluency, both rate and accuracy are important. Use passages that are at an instructional level and read the same passage several times over successive days. If additional support is needed, practice and/or highlight words first, then invite the student to read the text silently before reading it aloud.

Resource

If you're not already familiar with Words Their Way (4th edition), by Bear, Invernizzi, Templeton & Johnson, locate a copy and start browsing through it now. It's a word study program that includes spelling inventories, word lists for word sorts, lesson formats & activities, and a DVD & CD-ROM that contain additional resources. Words Their Way is appropriate for K-12 classrooms and it's format is 'user friendly'.
